Hair Loss Medicines Are Linked To Depression And ED

Medications that treat hair loss are linked with the potential risk of depression and erectile dysfunction (ED).

According to a new study, drugs used for hair fall and prostate enlargement such as Finasteride and Dutasteride are associated with the risk of depression and erectile dysfunction.

Finasteride and Dutasteride belong to a class of drugs called 5-alpha-reducatse inhibitors. They act on hormonal level to manage androgenic alopecia and benign prostate enlargement. They inhibit the secretion of an enzyme 5-alpha-reductase in order to improve testosterone level.

Finasteride, in particular, is the most commonly used medicine for hair fall. Dutasteride is often prescribed for prostate enlargement.

A new report is suggestive of a possible link between hair fall medicines and mental health issues and ED. A medical team analyzed data from nearly 94,000 men who were above 60 years of age.

The researchers have found that 88% of men showed increased risk of harming themselves due to depression. And after 18 months, the risk increased to 95%. However, the risk of depression was less. Researchers opine that more studies are required to analyze whether it is depression or self-harm.

Another risk factor associated with Finasteride and Dutasteride is Erectile Dysfunction (ED). ED occurred in men taking these drugs after 180 days of regular medication. However, it was reversible. Men who stopped taking 5-alpha-reducates inhibitors experienced improved erections after 90 days.

Men taking these prostate and hair fall medicines had a risk of 5% of developing ED. Finasteride and Dutasteride share a common side effect i.e. impotence.

Men who are already at the risk of impotence must weigh the risks and benefits of the drugs. Experts say that older men taking these drugs for prostate issues might come up with different conclusions than young men taking them for male pattern baldness.

Men are advised to talk with doctor if they experience any unwanted side effects while using Finasteride or Dutasteride.

If you experience ED due to use of hair loss medicine, you can think of using Fildena (Sildenafil Citrate), which is one of the best ED pills.
