Key points
- Ejaculation occurs when you release semen as an outcome of sexual stimulation and reaching orgasm. Reproductive system of males releases semen while you ejaculate
- Ejaculation offers many health benefits physically and psychologically. Ejaculation reduces risks of prostate cancer
- Aging is a gradual process. It is not proven aging stops ejaculation. However, aging decreases testosterone levels in your system which influences your sex drive and sperm production
Aging is a part of your life. Multiple factors are involved in aging – such as physical changes over time, changes in your emotional wellbeing and mental condition – to name some. Aging is a continuous and a natural process. Many of your bodily functions decline – gradually – as you reach middle age.
Ejaculation is how men discharge semen as they reach a climax of their sexual act. The first time you ejaculate is when you reach puberty. This is the time your body starts making sperm. Male teens may attain puberty anywhere between 10 to 12 years.
As you turn mature and old, you witness palpable signs of middle age. For example – you may see wrinkles appear on your skin. You may also notice decrease in skin-elasticity. Your genetic makeup determines how soon your aging process starts.
Ejaculation and Aging: when does it stop?
Aging makes you experience a marked reduction in your sex drive (libido) and overall sexual performance. However, there is no known age by when ejaculation stops. It can happen anytime during your life. On the other hand, aging is an ongoing process. However, the rate of aging could fluctuate and it does not cease completely. This process remains active until one’s death.
But there is no proven data or evidence on stoppage of ejaculation with aging. Men – even after they age considerably – may still ejaculate. You need to know your testosterone levels influence production of sperm cells and libido. Once your testosterone starts to decline, you might naturally witness a reduction in the number of times you ejaculate. This may happen after you are aged above 35 – 40 years. However, most men retain their ability to ejaculate even after they are of 70 years of age.
No two males may see changes in sexual wellbeing or libido in the same manner. This differs significantly from one man to another. Men – at times – may not ejaculate due to reasons such as leading a stressful life, having issues with their relationship with partner(s), etc.
So, can men stop ejaculating as they age?
Ejaculation is an automatic activity – upon being sexually aroused – and you cannot force to stop it. However, if you desire not to ejaculate, then you can learn the techniques of controlling or delaying ejaculation. This is possible with Kegel exercises – which strengthen your muscles of your pelvic floor or with squeeze techniques.
Men may remain without ejaculations for a long period – say, for a year; this seldom causes any adverse reactions. During this time, your body reabsorbs sperm cells that are not ejaculated. This process does not affect fertility or your overall sexual wellbeing.
However, a few men – if sexually aroused without ejaculating – may encounter mild discomforts like “blue balls” causing pain in their scrotum.
Factors responsible for a delayed ejaculation or ejaculation-related problems
Delayed ejaculation can be due to physical, psychological, lifestyle changes, etc. It may also be owing to a medical condition you are living with; conditions such as diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, neurological injuries, etc.
Delays in ejaculation may also occur as a side effect of some drugs. Some antihypertensives, antidepressants (especially of the SSRI genre), diuretics – to name a few – may trigger such delays.
As you age, you need to know of challenges you may encounter with ejaculation; these are –
- Premature Ejaculation (PE) – you may witness Premature Ejaculation at any age. This could be a result of low level of serotonin in your body. Premature Ejaculation occurs when semen leaves quicker than expected while you are romancing your partner
- Retrograde Ejaculation – is a condition wherein semen flows in reverse! A reversed flow makes semen get into bladder and urethra – i.e., instead of flowing out of the penis
When to meet your doctor?
If you are excessively worried of your sexual wellbeing, you need to consult with a qualified sexologist / caregiver. You need to discuss discomforts you currently face as you try ejaculating. Discuss with your physician of pains or other discomforts – if any, you experience each time you ejaculate.
It helps to have an open discussion of prior experiences of having unprotected sex, having multiple partners, etc. It is highly recommended not to withhold information from your sexologist. Your doctor gains a better perspective and understands your ejaculation-related problems. Such understanding leads to making a proper treatment plan, therapy sessions or a combination of both.
