Can A Hernia Cause Erectile Dysfunction

A sexual disorder like erectile dysfunction (ED) is not uncommon. It can happen to men regardless of age. The reason for its occurrence differs from person to person. Some may develop it because of physiological reasons, while others due to some psychological issues.

A condition like hernia might also cause some sexual difficulties in men. It has various types, out of which inguinal or groin hernia can potentially cause impotence problems. This type of hernia occurs near the crease between the lower abdomen and the upper thigh.

Those who underwent hernia repair surgery might as well experience erection difficulties for a temporary period. They may continue to struggle with erection function after the surgery. Once they heal and fully recover, their sexual difficulties subside.

What is hernia?

Hernia is a weakness or an opening in the abdominal wall, which happens because of the bulging of the internal organ from the muscle that contains it. The soft tissues like fat or intestine protrude out from the abdominal muscles appearing like a bump on the outside.

Mostly, hernia occurs in the abdominal cavity. A type known as inguinal hernia commonly observed in males. An inguinal hernia occurs in the groin, that is, in the creases between the lower abdomen and upper thigh.

It might give rise to mild to moderate intensity pain in the lower abdomen or around the scrotum. The pain is usually felt while sitting, exercising, and so on. This can happen at any age.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is a condition that affects the ability to get and maintain stronger erections. The reason for this is the lack of adequate blood supply through the arteries of the penile. The factors contributing to these sexual issues can be physiological or psychological.

Moreover, several other factors that can cause erection difficulties include chronic smoking, alcohol intoxication, injury, surgery, medicinal side effects, and recreational drugs use.

Hernia contributes to discomfort. When some sort of pressure gets applied to the region where it appeared, it causes mild moderate degrees of pain. Specifically, if the bulging has occurred in the groin, that is, between the crease of the lower abdomen and the upper thigh, the person may face major difficulties while sitting, moving, doing sexual activity, and so on.
